Today’s challenge in the FB Group Ficțiuni Reale is “Romanian kiwi” – ideal for dystopia and eco-criticism. My contribution (in under 520 characters including spaces) below:

Kiwi românesc

Ia kiwi neamule, kiwi dulci ca mierea! striga precupeața. Vorba vine, nu era o femeie în carne și oase. Era Alexa conectată la GPT-24, o versiune ieftină. Scumpe foc. Măcar sunt românești? se interesă bătrânica zgâindu-se în camerele video agățate din tavan. Asudase. Arșița Bobotezei o termina. Românești maică. În Suedia se fac abia în februarie. Bătrânica oftă. Își aminti de ultimul gelato cu kiwi din belșug pe care-l mâncase în tinerețe, înainte ca Italia să fie înghițită de mare. Să tot fi fost prin 2035. (514)

And here now the English adaptation:

Get your kiwis people, kiwis sweet as honey! shouted the tradeswoman. Of course it wasn’t an actual woman. It was Alexa connected to GPT-24, a cheap version. As expensive as ice… Are they at least Romanian? the old lady asked, staring into the video cameras that were hanging from the ceiling. The scorching Epiphany heat was killing her. Romanian, for sure. Over in Sweden they don’t ripen until February. The old woman sighed. She remembered the last kiwi gelato she had in her youth, before Italy was swallowed by the sea. It must have been in 2035.
